The Difference Between Inspiration and Discipline in Writing

The way we fall in love with writing is effortless. It feels like the story comes to you instead of forcing out characters, plot, and voice. That is called inspiration.
But a lot of us will find that whimsy doesn't stay. Whimsy flits in and out of our hands when it wants to, and we are forced to practice discipline.
Here's a short blog on the difference between the two!

Inspiration
Inspiration pulls you in. It is the driving force for why you start because it's exciting! When you're inspired words come quickly, your story feels clear, and you enjoy the writing because the details don't matter too much.
This has its pros and cons, as all things do. Although inspiration strikes heavily and makes you feel invincible, this feeling is unreliable. It's something you can't force or predict, so it's not really a choice. It's a moment in time.
Discipline
Discipline is where you find the choice.
This is where you push through, even when inspiration is not guiding you forward. Discipline is choosing to stick with your writing even after the excitement has faded away. This kind of writing has more focus on progress and perfection. It turned the drafts that came from inspiration into something more complete.
Why You Need Both
Because writing clearly combines inspiration and discipline!
Inspiration is why you care about what you're creating. It is the artistic passion you hold for your project. Discipline is the work you put in to finish and complete it. You can't go without either, and you can't have only one.
So don't feel bad if you're not feeling inspired! It's only part of a long process where discipline usually takes the reins. Hopefully this helps, and happy Saturday, writers! <3
