My Review: SPOILER WARNING NEAR THE END

I'm a little late to the party on this book, but I am glad I gave it my time.

I have a lot of thoughts about this book. I didn't pick it up for so long because 1. I don't like when popularity skews my thoughts, and 2. I was fairly certain this would send me into a downward spiral from what I'd already gleaned 😅.

This book is powerful. To me, it reads like a Stephen King novel. There's a certain appeal in reading about the daily life of a person. Offred was such an interesting main character. She fought to maintain her wit and strength, but also couldn't help succumbing to the reality of the world. Of people. Of desire. She felt very human to me.

The world itself was uncanny. You always believe "that could never happen" or "that wouldn't happen to me," and this book (along with our society) proves those wrong. It could be anyone. It can be circumstances. You can ask "why me? " and never get a straightforward answer.

I'm going off-topic, but what I'm really trying to say is that this book makes you think about those uncomfortable thoughts. It dives into the worst parts of humanity, and I respected it left a lot to the imagination. The ending, for example.

SPOILERS

We never really know if Nick is telling the truth in the end. If he really has feelings for Offred or not, because neither is allowed to 'feel'. We don't know what happens to Offred once she enters the van. Moira's future remains unknown. I respected that a lot of the questions weren't answered because they didn't need to be. We, as readers, understand the circumstances of the world, and it's up to us to use our critical thinking to see what happens next.

Overall, it was an entertaining and purposeful read!
