Visual Inspiration: Poems Inspired by Photography

Writer's picture: Kayjah TaylorKayjah Taylor

Poetry is a medley of similes and metaphors that can paint a picture in the reader's mind. Visuals of nature, people, and experiences are condensed into a powerful work of writing that lets the reader glimpse into the author's head.

Photography has been a key point of inspiration for me when I can't find a topic to write about. Below, I'll showcase some of my pieces (which you can also find on my X account) and the photography that inspired them!

sunlight drifting up my skin

i am letting my toes

out and tanning until

my body melts into a

puddle of summer and

saccharine daydreams.

i have not experienced death

but i laid my heart in a coffin

many times before. prayed

over the last beat. i’ve watched

it lower into the ground, and i’ve

dug it out again despite the rot.

traces of gray

i smudge the edge of

your mouth with granite

stained fingers, get a

taste, and drizzle letters

into your mouth like honey

or poison.

somewhere beneath the night and the city lights

i am sitting barefoot against

the cobblestones, listening

to the sky vent, and the moon

drink herself into a stupor.

take my spine

rather, let me grow along

each vertebra, love. i

promise to keep this

part of your safe. i

promise to plant the roots

you’ve neglected.

i see her, swaying with

the waves, her face

turned up to the moon

who caresses and listens

to her whispered voice.

fear the shallows

but do not clench your

brows, darling. the water

knows, will lap at your

weakness and churn all

your desires into froth.

ataraxia achieved

i become the starry night. i

become the blues that swirl

so gracefully into a never

ending twilight, and who is

to stop me from circling my

own thoughts in madness?

tickled breaths

against my neck, i lay

my head back and

welcome whoever

dares to taste all my

forbidden desires.

Why do all the pretty little things end up dangling?

Hopefully, you can also find inspiration in these still moments of poetry <3 Happy Saturday!
