What Happens When You Stop Trying to Sound Like a “Real Writer”

Because 'real writers' don't exist.
There are writers whose work and more polished, and some whose works may be more profound. However, we are all writers, just at different stages of our careers.
It took me a long time to realize that in trying to sound like more profound writers; I was losing my individuality.
This happens when you stop that train of thought.

You write more naturally
This is something I see a lot of other writers struggle with. The temptation to write it perfectly the first time.
It's just not the way things go! Even the most seasoned writers have their work go through multiple edits, drafts, etc. When you're trying too hard to copy another author's work, you end up going through this process, and your writing can come out awkward. The act of writing is not inherently intended for public display. The intention is for it to be genuine.
Try to ask yourself what you're trying to say instead of if it's good enough.
Your voice is more recognizable
Maybe it's just me, but I'm tired of reading books with the same structure. I've made it a point and ritual to read ARC books by indie authors, and to stray away from the 'real writers.'
The thing is, they sound the same. Trying to copy their voice is just adding another of that same style to the mix. Every author deserves to have their natural rhythm in the spotlight. The way you phrase sentences, what motifs you enjoy showcasing, and your emotions are the way you become a brilliant writer.
It is authentically you.
You're more inclined to take creative risks
Don't play it safe! This ties into my previous point, where many authors lose their voice trying to stick with what they want their writing to sound like. If you stick to what's socially acceptable, you'll feel like your writing belongs there.
It doesn't! Break the rules. Make your writing messy [but understandable]. Explore themes that no other author has dared to dive into! That's the stuff people want to see! Writing is wholly about exploration, so explore and see what you find.
You stop over-explaining
Authors often believe that overexplanation is the key to providing a clear visual for their readers. As someone who reads more than they write, I can say that this is false.
It is much easier to overcomplicate your writing than not to. Letting go of the image you want your writing to have allows space for your words to be stripped. You can take out all those unnecessary words and get to the point!
You redefine what a 'real writer' is
Something will shift.
When you stop chasing a standard, you often come back with something fresh and authentic. You'll stop comparing and will write in a way that's most beneficial to you and your readers.
'Real writers' don't sound a certain way. Their genuine voice has been refined and transformed into something beautiful.
Was this one a little harsh? Maybe, but I'm so passionate about writers retaining their voice, and feeling confident in their journey. We all have this stage! I promise your writing will make someone happy.
Thank you for reading, and happy Saturday <3
