What Moves the Dead (Book 1 of 3) by T. Kingfisher

First Line:

The mushroom’s gills were the deep-red color of severed muscle, the almost-violet shade that contrasts so dreadfully with the pale pink of viscera.

My Review: NO SPOILERS

Super creepy and haunting

I’ve been anticipating this book after seeing so many recommendations on social media. It did not disappoint!

I feel like this book is not about the story as much as it is about the atmosphere. Meaning, you can guess the story pretty quickly, but reading was definitely an experience. It was tense, it was gory, and it was downright creepy. The beginning set the tone for the rest of the book, and the middle definitely settled into the unsettling. A great read that’s made even more horrible by its realism.

Rating:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My Favorite Quote(s):

Sometimes it’s hard to know if someone is insulting or just an American.

I followed the gesture to where wallpaper had peeled back from the walls, hanging in rags, leaving the exposed flesh of the building behind.

It reminds us that we are part of a great and glorious tradition of people doing gallant things in the service of a country that can’t find its arse with both hands and a map.
