Why I Love Writing Different Genres

I have rarely seen authors who delve into different genres. Although I'm sure some authors do exactly that, I haven't seen them. As someone who loves exploring, I can never 'pick a lane' or master a single genre.

I am particularly fond of poetry and fantasy, with two poetry collections and one fantasy novel out at the moment. One allows me to transport myself to a different world, while the other allows me to explore the world around me. They are both incredible genres, and here's why I love writing both.

Feeding My Fantastical Mind

Writing fantasy opens doors to the impossible. There is a certain satisfaction and thrill that comes with creating a world no one has walked before. Writing fiction is writing about all the what-ifs that could exist. This includes, but isn't limited to:

  1. Building cultures, worlds, and magic systems from scratch. You can create all of these systems from scratch and have fun doing it!

  2. Exploring through metaphors and imagery is another strong point of fantasy. You can have magical items or people that represent real-life problems.

  3. Combine the two! Build your world around images that represent your personal struggles. This can make the story more enticing, and can also help you write out your inner thoughts.

Fantasy permits you to dream beyond the confines of reality.

Being Grounded in the Present

Poetry represents the other side of the coin. Where fantasy represents the limitless possibilities outside of reality, poetry is rooted in the present. It is the heartbeat, your heartbeat, of the current time and place. Poetry forces you to slow down and pay attention to the small details, while fantasy focuses on the broad perspective.

Something I also love about poetry is that it forces me to focus on what I'm seeing, hearing, and experiencing. It forces me to look inward and to accept what is happening in my present. It is raw and honest in a way that fantasy isn't.

Sometimes writing is not about invention. It's about reflection.

My advice? Don't be afraid to try something new (especially if you're feeling stuck). Writing is not about fitting into one box; it's about building bridges between different genres.
