Writing Without a Plan: Chaos as a Method

When I first dove into novel writing, I scoured the internet for tips and tricks on how to start. Most of those sources encouraged a carefully curated blueprint. And outline. Color-coded notes.
I've always been an organized person, but for whatever reason, those methods never worked for me. Stories don't always have instructions attached to them. Most times, they're partially developed plans or a feeling you should act upon. Often, my characters veered off the path, and I had to follow their desires.
As someone who enjoys a bit of chaos and doesn't plan everything, I've found these three writing tips helpful.

Stories don't always conform to an outline. Like I stated before, my characters always veered off the path I carefully planned out for them. They have a life of their own and need breathing room to follow what they desire and are curious about. Outlining too early means I'm trying to solve a problem the story hasn't asked yet. Use your instincts to enhance your writing!
Chaos doesn't mean without skill. The beauty of writing lies because we learn as we create. Our style, word choice, and choices manifest as we do. Chaos isn't random, it's about following your characters' lead and understanding their goals. Letting your characters and story dictate the direction, without a pre-written plan, has an organic quality.
Follow that train of curiosity. What are you curious about? Think about emotions that haven't taken the forefront of your story. Think about what would make a moment comfortable. Honest. Strange. What would your character do if they faced a different choice? Embrace curiosity and mystery as your guides when you're lost.
I am not suggesting that you should never plan when I tell you to write with chaos. You just don't need to start with one. Plan out the important parts, and then trust your story to develop on its own. Pay attention to the message your story conveys, even if it goes against conventional writing advice.
Thank you for sticking with me, and I hope these tips help you start your next story! Happy writing and happy Saturday! <3
